runner: a rope that moves to multiply mechanical advantage
A runner is a rope threaded through a movable block in a tackle system, where one end is fixed and the other end is hauled to lift or move a load. Unlike a standing line that stays fixed, the runner itself travels through the block as you pull on it, which is what distinguishes it from other parts of a tackle arrangement and gives it its name. This motion is the key to how runners generate mechanical advantage without requiring heavier rope or stronger personnel.
In a typical tackle configuration, the runner works together with fixed blocks and standing rigging to distribute load. When you rig a runner, one end attaches to a fixed point (like a ring bolt or rail), the rope passes through a movable block attached to the load, then back up through a fixed block at the top, and down to where you grip and haul it. Each pass through the system halves the force needed to lift the load, so a properly rigged runner with just two or three passes can reduce the required pull significantly, which matters when handling heavy cargo, hoisting machinery, or moving large sections during ship construction or repair.
Runners in shipyard practice
Shipyard workers use runners constantly for rigging heavy structural components, engine blocks, and hull sections into position. A runner rigged with a movable block carrying a 5-ton load and returning through a fixed upper block will require only about 2.5 tons of pull at the hauling end, which translates directly to fewer workers or less strain on winch equipment. The runner rope itself must have good grip characteristics and resistance to abrasion where it bends through the blocks, since this is where wear accelerates and rope failure begins. Wire rope runners handle higher loads than fiber rope in confined spaces, but they demand more careful handling because sharp bends can cause internal damage.
The critical failure mode is when a runner jam or hang-up occurs in a block, especially under load. If friction builds up or the rope catches as you haul, tension spikes suddenly, risking rope breakage or block failure. Seafarers and shipyard gangs learn to maintain clear routes for the runner to travel, keep blocks well-lubricated, and never stand directly under the load during hauling. Worn blocks with rough sheaves will chew through a runner quickly and create dangerous friction that can cause the rope to slip or kink.
The term runner predates modern mechanical advantage terminology and reflects practical experience: it is simply a rope that runs, as opposed to stays in place. You will encounter runners in old rigging manuals, in bosun training, and still in everyday shipboard and yard speech, even though many modern shipyards have replaced manual tackles with hydraulic winches. Understanding how a runner distributes load remains essential knowledge, because tackle and runner systems are still deployed for precision work, emergency repairs, and situations where powered equipment cannot reach or where human control and feedback matter.
