The stem is a heavy vertical or nearly vertical timber or forging that rises from the forward end of the keel and forms the structural apex of a vessel's bow. It serves as the primary attachment point for the forward ends of all hull planks or strakes, whether the ship is built of wood, steel, or composite materials. In wooden ships, the stem is traditionally a single large timber, often oak, selected and shaped so its grain runs roughly parallel to its length to resist the enormous bending and impact forces that the bow encounters.
Steel vessels use a forged or rolled steel stem, typically a heavy I-beam or box section, sometimes built up from plate and welded. The stem connects downward to the keel and often incorporates a cutwater, a sharp edge or projection that helps split water and reduce wave-making resistance. The angle of the stem varies by vessel type: blunt, nearly vertical stems suit cargo ships and tankers, while warships and some fishing vessels feature raked (angled) stems that cut through seas more cleanly.
Damage and construction detail
Collision damage to the stem is among the most serious hull injuries because the stem carries enormous tensile and compressive loads. A cracked or dented stem can compromise the watertightness and structural integrity of the entire forward section. In wooden shipbuilding, the stem is fitted with a rabbeted groove (the stem rabbet) that receives the planking; poor fit between plank and stem rabbet leads to leaks and rot. Steel stems must be welded or bolted to the keel and to the forward frames without gaps or misalignment.
The term 'stem' derives from Old English and shares root with Germanic words meaning 'trunk' or 'tree trunk', a natural metaphor given that wooden stems were literally large tree trunks shaped by the shipwright's tools. Modern shipyards produce stems as prefabricated components, sometimes weighing dozens of tons, that are positioned and secured during the vessel's early construction phase.
