RY: alternating test pattern for teleprinter circuits
The RY pattern is a diagnostic sequence of alternating R and Y characters transmitted repeatedly through a five-level teleprinter or radioteletype system. It serves as a basic but essential check for circuit integrity, signal quality, and synchronization before live traffic. The pattern works because R and Y, when encoded in five-bit Baudot code, create complementary bit sequences that stress the system in opposing ways: R is 01010 and Y is 10101, so each character is nearly the inverse of the next.
Five-level systems like Baudot teleprinters use five bits per character, with two shift states (letters and figures) to access the full character set. The RY pattern's alternating bits exercise every transition in the system's receiving circuits, timing recovery, and pulse detection stages. When a teleprinter or radioteletype receiver struggles with RY, the fault is usually in distortion, amplitude loss, jitter, or threshold setting rather than a complete circuit failure.
Practical testing and variants
An operator transmits RY continuously and observes the printed or displayed output on the receiving end. Clean reproduction means the channel is fit for service; garbled or missing characters point to specific problems. The pattern is fast to send, easy to recognize visually, and requires no special test equipment. In radioteletype (RTTY) over HF or VHF, RY is still the standard quick-check before switching to operational frequencies.
Variants exist for more detailed diagnosis: YRYR, RYRYRY, or longer runs, which can reveal intermittent errors that a short RY burst might miss. Some operators use RZ as an alternative (with Z = 11111), but RY remains the conventional choice because its symmetry makes pattern recognition instinctive even when signal margins are poor.
The name itself is arbitrary historical convention, chosen for the Baudot alphabet and retained across decades of teleprinter standards. RY appears in maintenance procedures for Teletype, Creed, and other machine types, and persists in modern digital RTTY software. Its simplicity and effectiveness have made it outlast dozens of more sophisticated test methods in practical field use.
