A saucisse is a flexible tube filled with black powder or other explosive train material, used historically to transmit detonation over distance through mines, tunnels, and confined spaces. The tube itself is fabric, typically linen or cotton, heavily coated with pitch or tar to render it waterproof and structurally sound. The powder core allows flame to burn steadily along its length at a controlled rate, making it a primitive but reliable means of initiating charges where a direct fuse would be impractical.
The name derives from the French word for sausage, an apt comparison given the tubular form and uniform diameter. Saucisses were standard equipment in military mining during the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly for sappers tunneling under fortifications. A saucisse might be 6 to 12 millimetres in diameter and several metres long, allowing sappers to lay a powder train down a gallery and retreat to a safe distance before ignition.
The critical variables were the tightness of the packing, the quality of the pitch seal, and the powder composition. A saucisse packed too loosely would burn erratically or extinguish; too tightly, it risked rupturing from internal pressure. Damp or contaminated powder would cause the flame front to stall or branch unpredictably. These failures made the saucisse less reliable than later cord fuses and detonating cord.
Saucisses were also used in naval demolition work, where their water resistance gave them an advantage over loose powder trains. They appear in 18th and 19th century military engineering texts and were superseded gradually as paper and cotton-wrapped fuses became standardized. The term survives in historical military literature but has no modern industrial use; contemporary blasting operations use commercial detonating cord or electric initiation systems instead.
