In aerial combat, a scissors maneuver is a defensive tactic where a pilot repeatedly turns toward an attacking aircraft, forcing the pursuer to either break off or overshoot. The name derives from the crossing flight paths that resemble scissor blades opening and closing. When executed correctly, the defending aircraft gains a positional advantage by exploiting its turning radius or energy state, turning the tables on the attacker.
The maneuver works because an attacker approaching from behind expects a straight flight path or a gentle turn away. Instead, the defender commits to a tight turn directly toward the pursuer. This forces the attacker to either match that turn, bleeding airspeed and energy, or break away to avoid collision. Each cycle of the scissors trades altitude and speed for angle, gradually rotating the engagement until the defender is pointed at the attacker instead.
Variants and execution limits
The shallow scissors involves gentle, wide turns at altitude where aircraft can sustain turns longer without stalling. The flat scissors is a horizontal, level maneuver used at low altitude where neither fighter can afford to climb or descend. Vertical scissors execute the same principle in a climb or dive, exploiting one aircraft's superior rate-of-climb. Success depends on the defender's turn rate relative to the attacker; if the attacker's aircraft has a smaller turning radius or higher thrust-to-weight ratio, the scissors fails. Energy management is critical: a defender who bleeds too much speed in the turns becomes vulnerable to a zoom climb breakaway by the attacker.
Scissors maneuvers are taught in military fighter pilot training and remain tactically relevant in close-range dogfighting where modern missiles fail or are not deployed. However, they assume visual contact and relatively matched aircraft performance. Against a higher-performance opponent or at extreme altitudes where thin air limits turn rates, the scissors is a last resort rather than a winning tactic.
