SCNR: how clean your analog signal really is

Signal to effective clipping noise ratio measures the quality of an analog signal by comparing its useful amplitude to the noise floor created by quantization errors and clipping distortion. In practice, SCNR tells you how many bits of genuine information you are actually getting from a measurement or transmission channel, as opposed to noise and artifacts introduced by the electronics.

The term emerged in precision measurement and data acquisition where the difference between theoretical and real-world performance matters. A 16-bit analog-to-digital converter might be rated for 16 bits, but SCNR will tell you whether you genuinely get 16 bits of usable signal or whether noise, clipping, and non-linearity degrade that to 14 bits or 12 bits in your actual application. The ratio is usually expressed in decibels, comparing the RMS signal level to the RMS noise level present in the digitized output.

Where it breaks down

Clipping noise arises when a signal exceeds the input range of the converter or amplifier; the peaks are cut off, introducing harmonics and broadband distortion. Quantization noise is inherent to digital conversion: any analog value must be rounded to the nearest discrete level, creating a small error on every sample. Real systems suffer both simultaneously. Poor grounding, inadequate filtering, and impedance mismatches between stages all degrade SCNR, often more severely than the converter specifications suggest.

SCNR is distinct from more familiar metrics like signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) because it specifically accounts for clipping artifacts, not just thermal and electrical noise. It is also narrower than total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N), which includes all distortion products. For applications like audio recording, sensor signal conditioning, and instrumentation, SCNR is a better predictor of whether you can actually trust your digitized data than the converter's nominal bit depth.
