A scoop driver operates a load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicle, a small articulated loader used underground to move broken ore or waste rock from the mining face to a hauling point. The machine itself, colloquially called a scoop, has a front bucket bucket capacity typically between 2 and 6 cubic metres and articulated steering that lets it manoeuvre in tight drifts and crosscuts. The driver sits in a cabin above the engine, controlling hydraulic bucket, boom, and transmission via joystick and pedals.

Scoops are the workhorses of underground metalliferous mining and some coal operations, operating where large haul trucks cannot fit. A driver must position the vehicle to load from a drawpoint or directly from the broken ore pile, reverse clear of the loading zone, travel the route to the primary crusher or transfer point, dump the load, and repeat. This cycle continues for eight to ten hours per shift, making it one of the most physically demanding and repetitive roles in mining.

Variants and conditions

Modern scoops are typically diesel-powered with load capacities of 3 to 5 cubic metres; larger operations increasingly use electric models to reduce ventilation demands underground. Older cable-operated scoops are now rare. A driver must navigate uneven ground, manage brake fade on steep declines, and operate in poor visibility where dust control and lighting are inadequate. Articulated steering gives good manoeuvrability but can be unstable if the bucket is loaded asymmetrically or lifted too high on inclines.

The role demands spatial awareness, mechanical sympathy, and tolerance for noise, heat, and confinement. Drivers learn to read the bucket load, control the machine on unstable ground, and spot developing faults: slow hydraulic response, steering lag, or unusual engine sounds that signal maintenance is needed before failure traps them underground. Poor driving technique damages equipment faster and creates hazards for other workers in adjacent drives.

The term scoop driver emerged from the colloquial name for the LHD bucket itself. In Australia and southern Africa, the role is sometimes called a load-haul-dump driver or mucking machine operator; in North America, scoop driver is standard. Pay and conditions vary by jurisdiction and commodity, but the role remains entry-level for underground mining careers and a common path to operator, supervisor, or maintenance roles.
