screen print: ink forced through a mesh stencil onto fabric or sheet stock
A screen print is an image transferred onto a substrate by forcing ink through an open weave mesh screen. The mesh is masked so that ink passes only through the pattern areas, creating a sharp, opaque deposit. The process works on fabric, paper, plastic, wood, metal, and ceramics, making it fundamental to apparel decoration, signage, and decorative goods production.
The substrate is held flat against the screen, which is mounted on a hinged or pneumatic arm. A squeegee (rubber blade) is drawn across the screen at a consistent angle, typically 45 to 60 degrees, forcing ink through the open mesh and onto the material below. The screen is then lifted, the substrate removed, and the process repeats. Production speeds range from manual single-station setups (50 to 100 prints per hour) to automated carousels printing hundreds per hour across multiple stations.
Screen prints show characteristic qualities: solid, uniform color blocks; limited color registration on entry-level equipment; excellent ink adhesion due to the volume of ink deposited; and durability on properly cured garments. Multi-color work requires either separate screens for each color (printed sequentially) or more complex techniques like wet-on-wet printing or special separations. Halftone screens can simulate continuous tone, though halftone dots are visible under magnification.
Mesh and mask systems
The mesh count, measured in threads per inch (typically 60 to 400 TPI), determines detail resolution and ink deposit thickness. Lower mesh (60-110 TPI) passes heavy ink for coarse work and textiles; higher mesh (200-400 TPI) gives finer detail for posters and labels. The mask is created by photo-exposure of a photo-emulsion layer on the screen, making the stencil permanent until chemically reclaimed.Common problems include ink bleeding under the mask edges (caused by excessive pressure, dull squeegee, or too-fine mesh for the viscosity), uneven deposit thickness, and off-contact gaps that create ghosting. The ink must be carefully matched to the substrate: textile inks differ fundamentally from paper inks in cure mechanism and hand feel. Environmental concerns center on emulsion disposal and solvent cleanup, driving adoption of water-washable emulsions in some shops.
Screen printing remains economically superior to digital printing for orders above 50 to 100 units, where setup costs are amortized across the run. It is the dominant method for decorated t-shirts, sportswear, and promotional goods worldwide. The terminology reflects the mechanism: the pattern is literally printed through a woven screen, distinguishing it from lithography, digital, or direct-to-garment methods.
