press proof: final inspection before the job runs
A press proof is the last set of test impressions pulled from printing plates or digital workflow files immediately before production begins. It represents the final stage of quality control, where the customer and the print shop verify that color, registration, text, and image placement match the approved design files. Once the press proof is signed off, the plates are locked into the press and the job runs without further changes to the original artwork.
In offset lithography, the press proof is typically pulled on the actual production press using the real printing plates, substrate, and ink formulation that will run the full job. This differs from earlier proofs, such as contract proofs or soft proofs on screen, because it shows how the design will actually perform under press conditions: ink flow, impression pressure, and substrate interaction. For digital printing, a press proof may be generated directly from the RIP output or pulled from the first few sheets of a production run.
A press proof is inspected for several critical elements: color accuracy across the full sheet, trapping and registration between color separations, halftone dot gain, solids for even ink coverage, and placement of any variable data or finishing marks. The customer typically reviews the proof alongside a color reference standard or previously approved samples. Any corrections found at this stage require remake of plates or digital files, which introduces delay and cost, so earlier proofing stages are essential to catch errors before reaching press proof.
The term "press proof" distinguishes this final check from artist proofs or contract proofs created for client review before plates are made. In traditional letterpress and gravure work, similar final proofs served the same function. Today the practice remains standard in commercial offset printing but varies in digital workflows, where the line between proof and production can be less distinct, since digital presses do not require locked plates.
