SDHC card: high-capacity SD memory for industrial data logging
An SDHC card is a solid-state flash memory card built on the Secure Digital standard, with capacities between 4 and 32 gigabytes. The acronym stands for Secure Digital High Capacity. Unlike earlier SD cards (which topped out at 2 GB), SDHC cards use a different file system and addressing scheme that allows manufacturers to produce much larger storage in the same physical form factor, a 32 by 24 by 2.1 millimetre rectangle.
The key technical difference lies in the command structure and file allocation table. SDHC cards use FAT32 file system formatting, whereas earlier SD cards used FAT12 or FAT16. This means an SDHC card will not function in any device designed only for original SD cards, though modern readers are almost always backwards-compatible. Transfer speeds on SDHC cards run from 25 MB/s on basic models up to 104 MB/s on faster variants, with speed class ratings marked on the card itself (Class 2, 4, 6, or 10, indicating minimum sustained write speed in megabytes per second).
In industrial settings, SDHC cards appear most often in data loggers, test instruments, medical imaging equipment, and embedded systems requiring portable storage. An industrial temperature-rated SDHC card might operate reliably from minus 25 degrees Celsius to plus 85 degrees Celsius, far wider than consumer grades. Manufacturing equipment logs sensor data continuously to these cards; field technicians swap them out and download records for diagnostics or compliance documentation.
Reliability and failure modes differ sharply from mechanical storage. SDHC cards degrade through write-cycle fatigue; flash cells have finite rewrite endurance, typically quoted as 10,000 to 100,000 full erase cycles depending on the memory grade. Corruption can occur if power is lost mid-write, so systems with conditional write-protection or battery-backed controllers are preferred. Physical damage from moisture, static discharge, or thermal shock will render a card unreadable without recovery tools.
The name reflects the standard maintained by the SD Association, an industry consortium. When capacities exceeded 2 GB, the High Capacity variant was needed rather than revising the entire standard. Today, microSDHC (the tiny 15 by 11 millimetre variant) dominates consumer and many embedded applications, while full-size SDHC cards remain common in industrial instruments where replacement and handling are infrequent enough to justify the larger form.
