seam allowance: the fabric margin beyond the stitch line
A seam allowance is the strip of material between the edge of a fabric piece and the actual line where two pieces will be stitched together. When you cut a pattern piece from cloth, you cut it larger than the finished size to leave room for this overlap. The two pieces are then stitched together, and the raw edges of the allowance sit inside the finished seam, hidden from view.
Standard seam allowances vary by industry and product type. In apparel manufacturing, 5/8 inch (roughly 16 mm) is conventional in North America for woven fabrics, though 1/2 inch appears in some menswear specifications. Knit goods often use 1/4 inch because they are less prone to fraying. Industrial textiles, upholstery, and home goods may specify 1/2 inch or 3/8 inch depending on the weight of material and the structural demands of the final product.
Why the allowance matters
The allowance serves several practical purposes. It accommodates minor variations in cutting and sewing machines, prevents the seam from pulling apart under stress, and allows for adjustment during fitting or alteration after assembly. A seam allowance that is too narrow risks unraveling if the fabric is handled or washed repeatedly. One that is too wide wastes material and can create bulk at seams, especially in close-fitting garments or those made from heavy fabric.Grading seam allowances is standard practice in apparel production. Layers of allowance are trimmed back progressively as they approach the stitch line, reducing the total thickness of the seam. This technique is called understitching or layering. This means that the relationship between allowance and total seam width changes with size, which can affect the fit and visual balance of very large or very small pieces. Specification sheets for cut-and-sew contracts must always state the seam allowance explicitly to avoid costly errors during production.
