A seam presser is a heavy cylindrical roller towed behind a plough to consolidate freshly turned furrows. Its purpose is to re-establish soil contact after the plough has lifted and inverted the earth, which is essential for moisture retention, seed-to-soil contact, and preventing excessive air pockets that would damage germination rates and root development.
The implement consists of a steel drum, typically 0.9 to 1.2 metres in diameter, mounted on an axle and supported by a frame. Weight ranges from 500 to 2,000 kilograms depending on the model and soil type. The drum may be smooth or ribbed; ribbed rollers (with circumferential grooves) provide additional breakdown of clods while pressing, and are preferred in heavier clay soils. Smooth drums work better on already friable ground.
Seam pressers are most commonly pulled immediately behind the plough, either as an integral attachment or as a separate trailed implement. This timing is crucial: pressing soil while it is still warm and has optimal moisture content ensures better compaction and prevents the formation of hard, unworkable pans that develop if soil is allowed to dry first. The pressure exerted is roughly 0.5 to 1.5 kilograms per square centimetre, depending on the implement's weight and tyre contact patch.
Seam pressers are standard in cereal cultivation, particularly with conventional (mouldboard) ploughing systems. They are less commonly used with conservation or minimum-till methods, where soil structure disturbance is deliberately minimized. Overuse or pressing at the wrong soil moisture can cause compaction damage: soil that is too wet will form a dense, poorly-draining layer; soil that is too dry will not consolidate effectively and the implement becomes redundant.
The term 'seam' refers to the furrow slice itself, particularly the line where it lies against the ploughed bed. Modern practice increasingly challenges the necessity of seam pressing on soils with good structure, and many operators now adjust compaction strategy based on soil moisture content at pressing time rather than treating it as a standard pass. The implement remains standard equipment on traditional arable farms but is gradually being displaced by integrated tine cultivation systems that combine loosening and compaction in a single operation.
