A second source is a manufacturer licensed to produce components, assemblies, or equipment originally designed and patented by another company, the first source or original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The second source holds legal rights to manufacture identical or functionally equivalent products to the first source's specifications, typically through a licensing agreement that includes technical documentation, tooling access, and quality standards.
Second sourcing exists because customers and system integrators need supply security. If one manufacturer controls a critical component, a microprocessor, connector, or specialty resistor, a single factory shutdown, yield problem, or capacity constraint can halt production downstream. A second source guarantees alternative supply. This is especially vital in aerospace, defense, medical devices, and automotive work, where single points of failure create unacceptable risk. Qualified second sources must meet the same electrical, mechanical, and reliability specifications as the original, often verified through qualification testing.
The relationship differs from simple copying or generic equivalents. A second source does not design the product; it manufactures to the first source's drawings, process specifications, and material approvals. The license typically includes rights to use the original part number or a cross-referenced designation, though some agreements allow a second source to apply its own part number. Documentation, test data, and traceability must flow back to the first source for audit purposes in regulated industries.
Second sourcing introduces practical complications. Matching the first source's process exactly is difficult; small changes in supplier, temperature profile, or material lot can alter electrical or mechanical characteristics. This is why qualification includes full parametric testing and sometimes reliability burn-in. Costs may differ between sources, creating pressure to use the cheaper option, but cheaper does not mean identical under stress or over temperature. In military and aerospace contracts, second-source approval is often contractually mandatory before design release.
The term second source also appears in purchasing strategy: "dual source" or "multiple source" refers to qualifying two or more manufacturers before design freeze. This is planning ahead. "Sole source" is the opposite risk condition, when only one vendor supplies a part. Procurement and engineering departments track second-source availability because design obsolescence becomes critical when a first source discontinues a part and no qualified second source exists to absorb the demand.
