A section beam is a large cylindrical drum that accumulates yarn during the warping process, receiving thread simultaneously from multiple spools arranged on a creel. It sits at the heart of a warping machine, rotating slowly as yarn feeds onto it under controlled tension. The beam builds up concentric layers of parallel yarn, each layer separated by a thin divider or spacer to prevent yarn from shifting sideways during winding.

The width of a section beam typically ranges from 60 to 200 centimetres, depending on the mill's production setup and the width of fabric to be woven. Yarn count, fibre type, and desired warp density all determine how many yarn ends feed onto the beam simultaneously, commonly anywhere from 100 to over 1000 individual threads. The beam itself is usually made from cast iron or steel, designed to withstand significant radial pressure as thousands of metres of yarn accumulate at high tension.

Building and transferring warps

Once a section beam reaches its target diameter, usually 1.5 to 2.5 metres, the warp is complete. The beam is then removed from the warping machine and transported to a beaming or creel station, where its yarn is transferred onto a weaver's beam (or loom beam) through direct creeling or sizing. Some mills skip this step by using warping machines that wind directly onto loom beams instead, but section beams remain the standard for high-volume, multi-warp production because they allow parallel warping of several beams simultaneously.

Tension control is critical during section beam winding. If tension is too loose, yarn slips between layers and causes slack or broken threads during weaving. If too tight, it can break delicate fibres or distort their structure. Modern warping machines use dancer rollers and electronic brake systems to maintain consistent tension across the full beam diameter, even as the beam surface area expands.

Problems arise when yarn wraps unevenly, creating soft or hard spots in the cross-section. Poor creel balance, uneven spool weights, or failing yarn guides cause yarn to feed at different tensions, visible as bands of loose or tight winding. Debris or broken yarn fragments trapped between layers can also cause pilling and breakage downstream during sizing or weaving.
