A yarn-beam is a heavy cylindrical roller, typically 1 to 2 meters wide, that stores wound warp yarn for delivery to looms, knitting machines, or other textile processing equipment. It sits horizontally at the back of a loom or as a standalone creel station, rotating to unwind yarn at a controlled tension as the machine consumes it. The beam itself is usually made of steel or aluminum tubing, with flanged ends to prevent the yarn from wandering across the width.

The yarn is wound onto the beam before production begins, either in a single layer or in multiple bands wound parallel to each other. Beam width and core diameter vary by equipment and fabric width: a loom producing cloth 2 meters wide will need a correspondingly wide beam. The beam rotates on adjustable bearings and is driven either directly by the loom or by a separate motor with slip-ring or magnetic coupling, allowing the machine to control tension independently of loom rhythm.

Tension and troubleshooting

Proper yarn tension from the beam is critical. Too little tension causes slack, uneven color, and pattern breakage; too much tension breaks delicate yarns or distorts the weave. Tension is usually maintained by a dancer arm, brake assembly, or direct tension control on the beam motor. Uneven winding on the beam (called barreling or soft spots) creates variable tension across a production run and is one of the most common yarn-related faults on the loom floor. Hard patches where yarn was wound too tightly can snap during weaving, while loose wraps cause the yarn to slip under load.

The beam must be extracted and re-wound if yarn becomes degraded, tangled, or wound out of specification. This is labor-intensive, which is why beam preparation is treated as a separate production step in larger mills. Some beams are designed as exchange units, allowing a loaded beam to be swapped quickly while the empty one is taken to the beam-winding department.

Yarn-beams are distinct from warp beams used in sizing operations, though the hardware is similar. A warp beam holds yarn after it has been sized and is ready for the loom, while a yarn-beam is the raw supply. The term is sometimes used interchangeably in practice, creating confusion; context (position in the process line) usually clarifies which stage is meant.
