Security distance is the minimum spacing a driver must maintain behind another vehicle to avoid collision if that vehicle brakes suddenly. It is measured in time or meters, with the time-based rule being the most practical: at any speed, you should be able to see the road surface where the vehicle ahead was when you pass it. This is often taught as the two-second rule in dry conditions, meaning your vehicle should take at least two seconds to reach the point where the lead vehicle was when you started counting.
The physical distance required depends entirely on speed. At 50 kilometers per hour on dry asphalt, roughly 28 meters suffices; at 100 kilometers per hour, you need 56 meters or more. Wet roads, worn brakes, poor visibility, and driver reaction time all reduce the safety margin, so prudent drivers increase the interval. Reaction time itself typically adds 0.75 to 1.5 seconds before braking even begins, meaning the two-second rule is already quite minimal under ideal conditions.
Vehicles with less responsive brakes or heavier loads require longer distances. Commercial trucks and buses cannot decelerate as quickly as cars, so regulations in many jurisdictions mandate greater following distances for heavy vehicles. Modern braking systems on passenger vehicles can achieve deceleration rates of 7 to 10 meters per second squared, but older systems or those in poor condition perform much worse.
The term reflects the legal and insurance requirement that a driver maintain enough distance to respond to sudden events. When a rear-end collision occurs, the following driver is nearly always held at fault because security distance is a basic duty of care. Photographs of skid marks and the final positions of vehicles help accident investigators determine whether the trailing driver had adequate spacing.
Security distance becomes harder to maintain in congested traffic where lane discipline breaks down. Professional drivers and fleet operators monitor this systematically, particularly in industries like transport and delivery where collision prevention directly affects insurance premiums and operational costs. Automated braking systems on newer vehicles help enforce this distance by intervening if the gap closes unexpectedly, though they supplement rather than replace driver judgment.
