seeder: machine that places seeds at controlled depth and spacing

A seeder is a mechanical device that deposits seeds into soil at uniform depth, spacing, and rate. The most common type, the seed drill, opens a furrow, drops seeds at intervals, and covers them in a single pass. This differs fundamentally from broadcast seeding, where seeds are scattered by hand or spinner and must be harrowed in afterward. A properly functioning seeder wastes far less seed, establishes more consistent plant populations, and allows precise application rates measured in seeds per meter or per acre.

Seeders vary by crop and scale. Small garden seeders are push-operated and drop seed into a single furrow. Agricultural seed drills may have 6 to 24 rows, spaced 15 to 30 centimeters apart, mounted on a toolbar pulled behind a tractor. Pneumatic seeders use compressed air to convey individual seeds from a hopper through tubes into the ground; mechanical seeders rely on fluted wheels, belts, or fingers to meter out seed. Precision seeders for high-value crops like sugar beets or vegetables can space seeds to within 2.5 centimeters. Bulk seeders for cereal crops prioritize speed and capacity over exact placement.

The key working parts are the seed hopper, metering mechanism, and furrow opener. The metering mechanism is the critical component: it must handle seed of varying sizes and shapes without jamming or double-dropping. Fluted-wheel meters work well for round or spherical seed; belt-drive meters suit irregular seed; finger meters (rotating discs with pockets) work across a wider range of seed types. Furrow openers may be simple V-shaped chisels, disc openers, or double-disc openers; deeper soil requires more robust openers. Depth wheels or furrow wheels follow the opener to maintain consistent planting depth.

Common problems and causes

Uneven seed spacing results from worn or damaged metering components, incorrect seeder settings, or bridging in the hopper (seed arching over without dropping). Double-seeding occurs when the metering mechanism fails to clear properly. Skips happen when seed flows past the metering element without being captured. Seeding too deep or too shallow reflects incorrect depth-wheel adjustment or incorrect disc gap. Worn seed plates wear out after 800 to 1,200 acres depending on abrasive soil conditions; replaceable plates are standard on quality seeders.

The name 'seeder' covers many devices because the principle is ancient and has remained consistent: controlled delivery of seed to soil. Industrial seeders are built for repeatability and speed, often integrated with fertilizer applicators or herbicide systems on a single toolbar. Pneumatic vacuum seeders now dominate precision vegetable and specialist-crop markets because they handle pelleted and treated seed reliably, though they cost more and require cleaner equipment than mechanical models. For field crops at scale, fluted-wheel and belt-drive seeders remain the standard because they are robust, serviceable, and need no electricity or compressed air.
