Seersucker is a lightweight cotton plain-weave fabric characterized by alternating stripes of smooth and puckered (crinkled) texture running lengthwise. The puckers are created during weaving by running two sets of warp threads at different tensions, so one set contracts while the other remains taut, producing the distinctive corrugated surface without any chemical treatment or post-weaving processing. The fabric typically weighs 4 to 6 ounces per square yard and is almost always woven in a striped pattern, most commonly alternating white with blue, but also red, brown, or other colors.

The crinkled texture serves a functional purpose beyond aesthetics: the puckers create small air gaps between the fabric and skin, allowing better air circulation and moisture evaporation. This makes seersucker genuinely cooler to wear than flat cotton fabrics of the same weight, which is why it dominates warm-weather workwear and clothing in humid climates. The texture also has the practical benefit of partially concealing sweat stains, a quality valued in traditional menswear for business and formal settings in summer.

Production variants and properties

Seersucker is typically piece-dyed after weaving, meaning the striped grey goods are dipped in dye vats to achieve the final color. The puckered areas accept dye differently than smooth areas, creating subtle variation in shade that adds visual depth. Manufacturers produce seersucker in various weights and stripe widths; narrow stripes (around 0.5 inches) are preferred for formal garments, while wider stripes appear in more casual summer wear. The fabric has minimal shrinkage (usually 1 to 3 percent) and requires no pressing or ironing before wear, since the permanent crinkles mask wrinkles naturally.

The name derives from the Persian phrase shir o shakar, meaning 'milk and sugar', allegedly referring to the alternating smooth and rough texture. Seersucker production requires specialized looms capable of maintaining tension differentials, which limited its manufacture historically to mills with this equipment. Today it remains a specialty fabric rather than a commodity, commanding a modest price premium over standard cotton plains.

Durability can be a limitation: the puckered threads experience higher stress during wear and washing, leading to earlier pilling or fraying compared to smooth fabrics. Seersucker also attracts lint readily due to its textured surface. In industrial and trade contexts, seersucker appears mainly in summer uniforms for mechanics, technicians, and outdoor workers in warm regions, though fashion applications dominate overall demand.
