A light, collapsible reel used to hold a hank of yarn in order to wind off skeins or balls.

A swift is a mechanical frame, typically made from wood or aluminum, that holds a looped strand of yarn (a hank) under tension while you wind it into a ball or bobbin. The frame expands and collapses like an umbrella, which is why the term also appears in historical textile equipment. Its primary job is to keep the hank open and rotating smoothly so the yarn feeds out without tangling or kinking as you work.

The standard swift consists of a vertical central post mounted on a weighted base, with two or more horizontal arms that extend radially from the top. These arms can be spread apart to accommodate hanks of different circumferences, typically ranging from 36 to 60 inches around, though larger industrial swifts exist. A clicker or ratchet mechanism usually holds the hank in place and allows controlled rotation as the operator winds. The entire upper assembly rotates freely on the post, allowing even unwinding in either direction.

In practice, a hank of yarn from a dyer or mill arrives in a coil tied at several points. The operator places this loop over the swift's arms, unties the binding strings, and then sets the swift rotating while feeding yarn onto a ball winder or niddy-noddy. Without a swift, hanks tangle, kink, and become unusable. The tension and rotation speed determine how evenly the ball forms. Swifts are used across hand-knitting, weaving, and industrial yarn preparation, wherever hanks need conversion to packaged or usable forms.

Common problems arise when the arms don't stay stable under the weight of heavier or damp yarns, or when the ratchet wears and allows slippage. Some operators find the lightweight aluminum versions prone to vibration, while wooden swifts can warp if stored in humid conditions. Vintage cast-iron industrial swifts remain prized for their rigidity, though they are heavier and less portable.

The term "swift" likely derives from the speed at which it allows yarn to be unwound, in contrast to the slower, more laborious process of hand-holding a hank. The tool has remained essentially unchanged in basic function for over 200 years, a mark of effective industrial design. It sits at the boundary between fiber preparation and production, equally at home in a small dyer's workshop or a traditional mill.
