Serge is a worsted cloth made from long-staple wool fibers, characterized by a pronounced diagonal twill weave that runs at approximately 45 degrees across the fabric face. The weave structure, typically a two-over-two or three-over-three twill, creates a smooth, compact surface with distinct parallel ribs running diagonally. Because the yarn is combed and carded before weaving, serge resists pilling and maintains its appearance through repeated wear and cleaning, making it durable enough for workwear, suiting, and military uniforms.
The distinction between serge and other twill woolens lies in its fiber preparation and resulting hand. Serge uses worsted yarns, meaning fibers are straightened and aligned before spinning, producing a finer, tighter weave than woolen alternatives. A typical serge might weigh 240 to 400 grams per square meter. The diagonal twill surface creates natural light-diffusing properties, which is why serge has long been favored for suiting where a subtle sheen is valued without appearing flashy. The fabric can be produced from pure wool or blended with synthetics such as polyester or viscose to improve wrinkle recovery and reduce cost.
In manufacture, serge presents specific challenges. The tight weave requires careful tension control on looms to prevent warp breakage. Finishing operations must account for the fabric's tendency to shrink slightly during fulling and pressing, with manufacturers typically engineering a 2 to 4 percent shrinkage into production so finished goods meet specification. The diagonal twill also means the grain line runs at an angle, requiring pattern cutters in tailoring to account for directional nap when laying out garment pieces.
Common problems and applications
Serge's main weakness is its susceptibility to shine when worn repeatedly in the same areas, particularly at elbows and seats in suiting. This glazing occurs as fibers flatten under friction rather than from actual wear-through. High-quality serge intended for serious suiting is often treated with a protective finish to resist this effect. Military and workwear grades prioritize durability and may use lower-quality wool or synthetic blends, sacrificing some of the fabric's traditional hand and drape.
The name likely derives from the Old French serge, itself of uncertain origin, though historical evidence places serge production in the Mediterranean region by the 13th century. By the Tudor period, English merchants were exporting English serge, particularly from the West Country. Today serge remains a benchmark worsted for understanding twill structure and woolen properties, though production has contracted substantially as synthetic alternatives and jersey fabrics have displaced it in many applications where cost matters more than durability.
