An element of a curved grid used to separate desirable material from tailings or chaff in mining and harvesting.

Concave: the curved sieve that catches your ore

In mining and grain handling, a concave is a curved metal screen or grate positioned beneath a vibrating or rotating drum to capture particles of value while allowing finer waste to pass through. The concave works in tandem with the primary drum above it, which agitates, shakes, or tumbles the incoming material. By curving inward toward the drum, the concave holds material in contact with the surface longer, allowing gravity and the motion of the drum to do the sorting work.

The shape is critical. The concave curves around roughly 180 degrees, hugging the underside of the drum. This geometry keeps heavy ore particles or grain kernels pressed upward and forward by centrifugal force and drum rotation, while allowing undersize particles, dust, and chaff to drop through the grate openings and fall to a collection area below. Different applications demand different hole sizes: mining concaves might have 6 to 20 mm perforations, while grain cleaning screens use apertures as fine as 2 or 3 mm.

Materials vary by duty. Mining concaves are often cast manganese steel or cast iron, chosen for hardness and impact resistance in high-energy drum mills. Agricultural concaves are typically made from mild steel plate with punched or drilled holes, or sometimes from hardened steel wire cloth. The perforations themselves wear rapidly under the constant friction and impact of material passing over them, so concaves are designed as replaceable wear parts rather than permanent fixtures.

Concave deterioration is one of the most common bottlenecks in milling and processing. Sharp edges around the perforations dull and round over within weeks or months depending on load and feed rate, causing the screen to release too much fine material and lose efficiency. Punctures and cracks begin at the edges of worn holes and spread. Regular inspection and timely replacement prevent material bypassing the concave entirely and contaminating your finished product.

The term concave comes directly from the inward curve of the surface; it is the opposite of the convex drum it mirrors. In older equipment, the concave was sometimes referred to simply as a grate or screen, but modern industrial terminology reserves concave specifically for this curved, drum-hugging component. Understanding its role as a precision wear part, not a passive sieve, is essential for anyone responsible for maintaining separation efficiency in a mill or concentrator.
