A set-in sleeve is a sleeve piece manufactured separately and then stitched into the armhole opening of a garment body. This is the standard method for attaching sleeves in woven shirts, dresses, jackets, and tailored garments. The sleeve cap, the curved upper section that forms the shoulder, must be shaped to fit the curved armhole without puckering or bunching during the sewing process.

The geometry of a set-in sleeve is critical. The armhole depth typically measures 18 to 22 centimeters on adult garments, while the sleeve cap height usually ranges from 12 to 16 centimeters depending on fit and style. The sleeve cap contains ease, usually 1 to 3 centimeters of extra length folded into the seam, which allows the fabric to distribute smoothly around the rounded shoulder joint. Without this ease, the sleeve would pull and restrict arm movement.

Construction and common problems

The set-in sleeve is sewn in a single or double-stitched seam, often reinforced at stress points like the cap and underarm. Industrial machines used for sleeve setting may have special guides or attachments to control the ease and prevent tucks. The main failure mode is improper cap setting during initial assembly: if ease is bunched unevenly, the sleeve head ripples; if ease is insufficient, the garment binds across the shoulder; if the sleeve sits too far forward or backward, the underarm seam twists and the garment hangs crookedly.

Set-in sleeves contrast with other attachment methods such as raglan sleeves, which extend from the neckline to the underarm in one piece, and kimono sleeves, which are cut as part of the front and back panels. The set-in method demands higher precision in pattern-making and sewing but produces a more fitted, tailored appearance and better shoulder mobility than other techniques.

Quality control for set-in sleeves includes checking the seam line for straightness, measuring cap ease before sewing, and inspecting finished garments for symmetry and absence of puckering. This step accounts for a significant portion of defects in ready-made garments, particularly in budget production where automation may not compensate for pattern or fabric variation.
