A tool used to carry the woof back and forth between the warp threads on a loom.

shuttle: the bobbin-carrying projectile that weaves cloth

A shuttle is a small, pointed wooden or plastic carrier that holds a bobbin of weft yarn and travels back and forth across the warp on a power loom, depositing the weft thread to form cloth. On traditional looms the weaver threw it by hand; on modern industrial looms it is propelled by a picker mechanism driven by a rotating eccentric or cam, traveling at speeds up to 200 picks per minute across widths of 60 inches or more.

The shuttle itself is a compact, cigar-shaped container with a notched eye at each end where the weft yarn emerges. Inside sits a pirn or bobbin that unwinds as the shuttle crosses the loom. The pointed ends allow it to pass cleanly through the shed, the opening created between raised and lowered warp threads. A lip or guard on the underside keeps the yarn from tangling as it feeds. Shuttles must be balanced and smooth; rough surfaces catch yarn and create slubs or loose wefts that weaken the finished cloth.

Conventional shuttle looms dominated textile production until the 1960s, when projectile looms, water-jet looms, and air-jet looms began replacing them because shuttleless designs run faster, require less maintenance, and generate less noise and vibration. A traditional shuttle loom clears the shed and inserts weft in perhaps 0.3 seconds per pick; modern shuttleless machines do it in under 0.1 seconds. However, shuttle looms remain in use for heavy fabrics, corduroys, denim, and specialty weaves where the mechanical simplicity and yarn control prove valuable despite lower speed.

The word shuttle comes from Old English scytel, meaning a bolt or projectile, the same root as scuttle. The resemblance to a missile firing back and forth made the metaphor natural and persistent, even as hand-thrown devices became mechanized.

A worn or warped shuttle will jam in the race, the track it travels on, causing the picker to overwind and snap yarn or damage the loom. High-speed operation demands tight tolerances: a shuttle worn 0.02 inches out of round will miss picks or drift across the race, misaligning the fell, the edge of the advancing cloth. Replacement is routine maintenance; a mill keeps spares of each shuttle type on hand.
