One of a succession of niches or platforms, one above another, to hold ore which is thrown successively from platform to platform, and thus raised to a higher level.

A shamble is a series of stepped platforms or niches cut into a mine wall or built as a wooden structure, arranged vertically so that ore can be thrown from one level to the next, progressively raising it from the working face to the surface or to a higher chamber. Each shamble catches falling ore and provides a staging point where a worker can toss it upward to the next platform, eliminating the need for continuous mechanical hoisting over the full height.
The shambles were most common in hard rock and metalliferous mines where ore was broken into manageable chunks at the face. A typical shamble might be spaced 1.5 to 2.5 metres apart vertically, with a flat surface or slight depression to prevent material rolling off. The number of shambles depended on the depth being worked; deep shafts could have ten or more tiers. The ore moved by human effort alone, though some operations used lightweight wooden chutes between shambles to guide material without requiring precise throwing.
The name likely derives from the sense of rough or irregular work, though some sources connect it to the physical awkwardness of the motion itself. Unlike orderly chutes or conveyors, shambles relied on repeated manual catch-and-throw actions, making them labour-intensive and inefficient by modern standards. They were most economical when ore pieces were small enough for a single worker to handle, typically under 15 kilograms per throw.
Shambles appear in historical records from Cornish tin and copper mining and in lead mines across Britain and Europe. They fell out of use as mechanical hoisting technology improved and as mines deepened beyond practical shamble heights. The system worked best in mines where ore could be broken to suitable size at the face and where labour was cheap relative to capital investment in machinery.
The shamble system exposed workers to obvious hazards: falling material from above, unstable footing on narrow platforms, and exhaustion from repetitive lifting. Ore dust and poor ventilation around the platforms compounded the risks. Because shambles were permanent structures within the mine, their placement determined traffic patterns and access routes, often creating bottlenecks where multiple workers had to coordinate movement on narrow staging areas.
