A gurt is a shallow channel or trough cut into the floor of a mine drift to direct water away from the working face and toward the mine's main drainage system. In hard rock mining, water seeping into underground workings creates both safety and operational problems, so gurts became a standard feature of drift design, particularly in coal and metalliferous mines where groundwater management is critical.

The gurt is typically hewn or blasted into solid rock at the lowest point of the drift floor, following the natural gradient toward the exit. Dimensions vary with drift width and expected water flow: a gurt might be 6 to 12 inches deep and 12 to 24 inches wide, though larger workings required proportionally larger channels. The channel is left rough rather than smoothed, which helps water flow by preventing it from settling into pools that would soften the roadway and impede haulage.

Water collects in the gurt and flows by gravity toward sump pits or pumping stations at lower elevations. Without a gurt, standing water would accumulate at the working face, creating boggy conditions that damage timber props, promote roof decay, and impede miners' movement. In deeper mines with high hydrostatic pressure, the gurt alone is insufficient and must be supplemented by active pumping, but it remains the first line of passive drainage.

The term originates from Northern English and Scots dialect, where 'gurt' or 'gutter' denotes any channel or furrow. Mining adopted the word for this specific underground feature, and it persists in mining vocabulary despite the more formal 'drainage channel' now appearing in modern specifications. Older mine records and geological surveys frequently reference gurts when describing working conditions and water management.

Maintenance of gurts is straightforward but essential: sediment, coal dust, and debris must be cleared regularly to prevent blockage. A neglected gurt becomes a liability, allowing water to back up and saturate the working area. In abandoned mines, collapsed or silted gurts are often the first sign of poor ground stability in old workings.
