sheetwise

Printed one side of a sheet at a time, with the form replaced on the press between sides.

sheetwise: one side per press run, flip and repeat

Sheetwise printing means running one side of a sheet through the press, then removing that sheet, flipping it, reloading it into the feed mechanism, and running the reverse side through a fresh pass. Each side gets its own complete press cycle with its own inked forme. This contrasts sharply with perfecting, where both sides print in a single pass on a dedicated press.

The method requires manual handling between impressions, or semi-automatic sheet turning equipment on older presses. For small to medium runs of specialty work, sheetwise remains practical. The operator must ensure proper registration between front and back by using carefully positioned pins or marks; misalignment becomes visible and costly once binding or cutting happens downstream. Color registration is particularly demanding because ink sets between passes, and the substrate may have expanded or contracted slightly.

When sheetwise makes sense

Sheetwise dominates when substrate cost justifies careful handling, substrate thickness exceeds what perfecting units tolerate, or when job specifications demand forms that cannot be configured for perfecting. Heavy cardstock, textured art papers, or sheets approaching 0.01 inch thickness often run sheetwise. It also appears when makeready time or ink costs exceed the labor cost of manual sheet manipulation, particularly for short runs under 5,000 impressions per side.

The term carries genuine precision: it means one forme, one side, per pass through the press. Common confusion arises with work and turn printing, where a single forme prints both sides by rotating the sheet 180 degrees around one edge, requiring no forme change. Sheetwise requires two separate formes or rearrangement of a single forme between sides.

Digital offset and large-format inkjet presses have reduced sheetwise's frequency in volume production, but the term survives in job specifications, estimating sheets, and finishing departments that receive sheetwise-printed stock. Understanding sheetwise timing matters for scheduling: a 10,000-sheet job requires 20,000 press passes if printed sheetwise, versus one pass on a perfector.
