A shunting neck is a short section of track that branches off a main running line or yard lead, terminating in a dead end. Its sole function is to provide a safe staging area where a train or consist can occupy temporarily during shunting operations without blocking through traffic or fouling the main line. The track is typically equipped with a points (switch) at its junction with the main line and ends with buffer stops or sand drags to arrest any uncontrolled movement.

In yard operations, a shunting neck solves a common sequencing problem. When a train needs to reverse into a siding or storage track, it must first clear the running line entirely. Without a shunting neck, the locomotive would have to occupy the main line itself during this maneuver, creating a blockage. The neck allows the train to occupy the branch while awaiting clearance to proceed into its final position, or to stage intermediate cuts of wagons before final sorting.

Shunting necks vary in length depending on yard design and the maximum train length they must accommodate. A typical installation might extend 150 to 300 meters from the main line, though this varies by railway and local operating rules. The track geometry must comply with the same standards as the lines it serves, including rail weight, ballast type, and drainage, because it carries loaded stock under traction.

Common problems and design considerations

A poorly sited shunting neck creates operational bottlenecks. If the neck is too short, a train cannot clear the points entirely, leaving part of its length fouling the main line. If too many necks terminate near one junction, conflicting movements become inevitable. Points failure is also critical: a shunting neck with defective or sluggish points becomes impassable, stranding any train committed to it. For this reason, points on shunting necks are often inspected and maintained at higher frequency than other yard track.

The term reflects its function: it forms a narrow, temporary passage or opening (neck) into which a train retreats to gain space for shunting work. Shunting necks are standard in sidings alongside main lines, in goods yards, and in marshaling facilities where frequent coupling and uncoupling demand frequent reversing movements. They are absent only where yard design permits trains to reverse directly into their final location without occupying the running line.
