Sideboarding is the layer of material fastened to the exterior studs and sheathing of a building to form its weatherproof outer surface. It is distinct from the structural frame beneath it; its job is to shed water, resist wind-driven rain, and present a finished appearance. The term applies to any horizontal or vertical board product installed this way, whether wood, fiber cement, vinyl, or metal.
Wood sideboarding, the traditional form, comes as beveled boards (lap siding), shiplap, or tongue-and-groove stock, typically 4 to 12 inches wide and installed in overlapping courses so each board sheds water onto the one below. Fiber cement boards offer greater durability and fire resistance but require different fastening and are heavier to handle. Vinyl and aluminum products are lower-maintenance but less rigid and more prone to movement. Metal sideboarding, usually aluminum or steel, is common on agricultural and industrial buildings.
Installation begins after the sheathing and house wrap or felt underlayment are in place. Boards are nailed or screwed to studs, usually with a 16-inch or 24-inch on-center spacing. Proper spacing and drainage are critical; water that penetrates the sideboarding must be able to run down behind it and exit through drip edges and weep holes rather than pooling against the sheathing or rim board. Poor sideboarding detailing, especially around windows, doors, and roof lines, is a common source of water damage.
Maintenance and failure modes
Wood sideboarding splits, warps, and rots if exposed to wetting and drying cycles; painted surfaces fail and allow water ingress. Vinyl becomes brittle in cold climates and can be dented or torn. Fiber cement products are durable but heavy and generate silica dust during cutting, creating a serious respiratory hazard. All types can fail prematurely if fasteners are driven too tightly, preventing the material from moving with seasonal humidity changes, or if flashing and details are omitted.
The word sideboarding comes from the board materials themselves and their position on the side of the building. In North America, the term is regional; siding is more common in the United States, while cladding is preferred in technical and international contexts. In Britain and Australia, weatherboarding is the standard term. The distinction matters in specification and tender documents, where regional terminology must be used to avoid ambiguity.
