A bluetop is a wooden or plastic stake driven into the ground to mark the target elevation during site grading and excavation. The stake is typically painted bright blue at its top, making it visible from a distance across a partially cleared site. The height of the bluetop above the subgrade corresponds to the finished grade elevation required by the construction plans, allowing equipment operators and surveyors to maintain consistent cut and fill depths across the project area.

Bluetops are set by surveyors or grade checkers using leveling instruments, theodolites, or modern GPS systems. The stake is positioned at predetermined locations across the site, often in a grid pattern depending on the terrain and required precision. The visible portion above ground, sometimes marked with measurement increments or a painted band, tells the operator exactly how much material must remain or be removed at that point. Wooden bluetops are typically 2 inches by 2 inches in cross-section and driven 12 to 18 inches into the earth to prevent displacement by heavy equipment.

The name derives from the bright blue paint used to mark the top of the stake, making it stand out against soil and vegetation. The practice became standardized in North American construction and remains common in road building, site development, and utility installation work. Some contractors use other colors for different purposes, though blue remains the conventional marker for final grade elevation.

Bluetops are particularly useful on large grading projects where operators cannot maintain constant sight lines to reference points. They eliminate ambiguity about elevation targets and reduce the need for constant communication between grade checkers and equipment operators. However, stakes can be dislodged by wheel loads or tracked vehicles, so grades must be re-verified periodically as work progresses. On slopes steeper than 1:3, bluetops may require bracing or additional stakes to remain stable under their own weight and vibration from nearby machinery.

Modern alternatives include laser grade control systems and real-time kinematic GPS receivers mounted on grading equipment, which eliminate the need for physical markers. However, bluetops remain cost-effective for smaller projects and serve as a backup verification method on high-precision work. Surveyors often set bluetops even when electronic systems are in use, providing operators with a direct visual confirmation that equipment is maintaining grade.
