A signal bridge is a steel or concrete span structure erected perpendicular to the direction of rail traffic, carrying one or more wayside signals above the tracks it governs. Unlike a pole-mounted signal attached to a single mast beside the track, a signal bridge spans across two or more parallel lines, allowing a single structure to display aspects to trains on different routes from a common mounting platform. This arrangement is common at yards, junctions, and approach zones where multiple parallel tracks require coordinated signalling.

The bridge itself is typically a lattice or plate-girder frame, anchored at both sides to foundations set beyond the outer rails. Height varies with loading gauge requirements and sightline needs, but 18 to 24 feet above rail level is standard for main-line applications. The signal heads (mechanical semaphores, colour-light units, or modern LED displays) are bolted to cross-arms or cantilevered brackets projecting from the main beam. Mechanical bridges built before 1960 often used riveted construction; modern examples are welded throughout for maintenance efficiency.

Function in track layout

Signal bridges serve two principal purposes: they consolidate signals for multiple parallel tracks into a single sighting point that is clearly visible to locomotive crews from distance, and they eliminate the visual clutter of separate poles alongside each track. At a four-track main line, a single bridge with four or eight signal heads (depending on whether distant and home signals are combined or separate) replaces four individual mast installations. In yards, bridges often carry a mix of home signals, shunting signals, and route indicators on the same structure.

Maintenance access is typically via a fixed or removable ladder bolted to one leg, or occasionally via a platform attached to the bridge deck. Weight becomes a design constraint when mechanical signal mechanisms or heavy prototype colour-light equipment is mounted; modern LED signal heads have reduced this burden significantly. Clearances must be verified for overhead catenary wire in electrified railways, and wind loading calculations are critical in exposed locations.

The term 'signal bridge' is used primarily in North American and British railway practice. European railways more often refer to equivalent structures as 'signal gantries'. The distinction between a signal bridge and a 'cantilever signal' (which projects from a single mast) reflects the functional difference: a bridge is a full spanning structure, while a cantilever is an overhung arm. Both carry signals over the tracks; the bridge is chosen when signals must serve three or more lines or when sightline geometry favours a central viewpoint.
