A silo truck is a commercial vehicle with an integrated cylindrical or elongated tank mounted on the chassis, designed to transport free-flowing bulk materials in powder or granule form. Unlike liquid tankers, which carry milk or fuel, silo trucks move dry goods: cement, flour, sugar, sand, plastics pellets, or animal feed. The tank itself becomes the cargo container, eliminating the need for separate bags or drums.

The tank is typically fabricated from aluminum alloy or mild steel, ranging from 20 to 40 cubic meters in capacity. Air pressure or gravity discharge systems allow the material to flow out through chutes at the delivery point. Most silo trucks feature a compressor mounted on the engine to generate the 6 to 8 bar of pressure needed for pneumatic unloading. The interior surface must be smooth and the tank sealed tightly to prevent material degradation, moisture ingress, or contamination.

Common variants and materials

Bulk cement trucks are the most recognizable type, identifiable by their distinctive rotating chutes and ribbed aluminum tanks that prevent material sticking. Food-grade silo trucks for flour or sugar require stainless steel construction and sealed systems to meet health standards. Pellet tankers for plastics or animal feed often use carbon steel with epoxy lining. Smaller silo trucks for construction sites may carry only 10 to 15 cubic meters, while dedicated highway tankers exceed 40 cubic meters.

Loading occurs at the supplier's facility using either gravity chutes (for heavy materials like cement) or vacuum systems (for lighter powders). Discharge at the jobsite depends on the material and location: gravity feed into silos or hoppers, pneumatic push into ground-level storage, or vacuum extraction into portable containers. The driver must manage air pressure, monitor flow rates, and clean discharge lines to prevent blockages and cross-contamination between loads.

Silo trucks sit between dedicated tankers and bag transport in the logistics hierarchy. They reduce labor costs, speed delivery cycles, and cut packaging waste compared to bagged goods. However, they require specialized infrastructure at both ends of the journey and demand regular maintenance of compressors, valves, and internal tank surfaces. Material segregation rules are strict: a truck used for cement cannot immediately carry food-grade flour without thorough cleaning.
