A silver box is a modified dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signaling device that extends the standard 12-button telephone keypad to 16 buttons arranged in a 4x4 grid. The four additional keys sit in a rightmost column alongside the standard 10 digits, asterisk, and hash symbol. These extra buttons generate DTMF tones outside the standard telephone keypad range, allowing transmission of supplementary control signals over voice-grade telephone lines or similar audio channels.

The term originated in telephone switching and early telecommunications testing, where engineers used these devices to send extended command sets to remote equipment. The name likely derives from the metallic silver-colored chassis common on industrial test equipment of that era. In practice, silver boxes were used to trigger functions in private branch exchanges (PBX), automated test equipment, and voice mail systems that recognized the additional tones. The four extra keys typically occupy columns for functions like increment, decrement, hold, or custom system commands.

Technical operation and standards

Each button generates a pair of sine wave frequencies: one from a high group (1209, 1336, 1477, or 1633 Hz) and one from a low group (697, 770, 852, or 941 Hz). The standard 12-button layout uses the first three high frequencies; the 16-button layout adds the fourth high frequency to create the extra column. Typical tone duration runs 40 to 100 milliseconds with 40 to 60 milliseconds of silence between tones. Audio level sits around -7 dBm for each component frequency.

Silver boxes became less common after the rise of digital signaling and packet-switched networks, but remain in use for legacy telephone systems, private radio networks, and specialized industrial control applications where out-of-band signaling over audio channels is necessary. Modern equivalents include software DTMF generators and dedicated codec modules, though the 16-button configuration itself is rarely encountered outside maintenance of installed equipment.
