In automotive terms, a six-pack refers to an inline six-cylinder engine, so named because the six cylinders are arranged in a single row like cans in a beverage package. This configuration was common in mid-size American cars and trucks from the 1960s through 1980s, offering a compromise between the smoothness of a straight-eight and the compactness of a V-8. The term is informal but persistent in the trade, particularly among enthusiasts and older mechanics familiar with classic vehicles.

Inline six engines deliver inherently smooth operation because their cylinders fire in a sequence that creates balanced primary forces; the pistons move in pairs that mirror each other. A typical example is the 250 cubic-inch (4.1-liter) Chevrolet straight-six, which produced around 155 horsepower in its 1975 form. Ford's 200 and 250 cubic-inch sixes, and Mopar's 225 cubic-inch engine, were equally common. These engines were known for durability and longevity, often running well past 100,000 miles with routine maintenance.

The main advantage of the six-pack layout is its length. An inline six occupies significant hood space and requires a long engine bay, which eventually made it impractical for compact car designs as automotive trends shifted toward transverse mounting and front-wheel drive. By the 1990s, V-6 engines, which pack the same cylinder count into a shorter, wider package, had almost entirely replaced inline sixes in passenger vehicles, though the configuration persists in some commercial trucks and marine applications.

Performance variants existed: some manufacturers offered six-packs with higher compression ratios, larger carburetors, or dual intake manifolds for additional output. Chevrolet's 292 cubic-inch Turbo-Thrift six, used in heavy-duty trucks, demonstrated that the architecture could be pushed beyond passenger-car specifications. However, the fundamental design remained unchanged from the 1920s onward, making it one of the longest-lived engine configurations in automotive history.
