A skein is a metal band, usually of wrought iron, shrunk onto the wooden arm of a wagon or cart axle. Its purpose is brutally practical: to prevent the wood from splitting and splintering under the enormous stress of bearing the wheel and its load. The skein acts as a reinforcing collar, distributing impact and friction across a wider area of the wood grain.
The construction process requires precision. The iron band is heated until it expands, fitted over the wooden arm, and then allowed to cool and contract, creating a tight, permanent grip. This shrink-fit assembly was the standard method of axle strengthening for centuries before all-metal axles became dominant. A typical skein on a farm wagon might be between 10 and 20 millimetres thick, depending on the expected load and the size of the axle arm.
Skeins come in two main types: the simple split ring, which could be removed and replaced, and the continuous band, which was permanent. The continuous band, sometimes called a box skein when it fully enclosed the axle arm, offered better support but required removing the wheel to replace a damaged band.
Why the term, and where it survives
The word skein derives from Old Norse skein, meaning sheath or covering, which maps precisely onto its function. The term is now dated because wooden axles are relics. Steel and alloy axles made the skein redundant by the mid-twentieth century.
You will still encounter the term in restoration work on heritage wagons, in museum documentation, and in accounts of nineteenth-century transport infrastructure. Anyone working with antique carts, reconstructing historical wagons, or researching period transport methods needs to recognize what a skein is and how it was fitted, because damage to or replacement of skeins was a routine expense in any working wagon owner's budget.
