Skidding is the phase of timber harvesting where cut logs are dragged from the felling site to a central collection point, called a landing or deck, for loading onto trucks. It bridges the gap between the sawyer who fells trees and the hauler who transports them to the mill. The distance is typically 50 to 500 meters through rough forest terrain, depending on how far the crew must travel to reach an accessible road or skid trail.
The main equipment choices define how a crew skids: wheeled skidders straddle and haul logs on rough ground using cable or grapple, while tracked machines move through swampy or steep terrain more safely. Cable systems, either stationary (yarders) or mobile, pull logs uphill or across terrain where machines cannot reach. High-lead and carriage systems suit steep mountainous terrain. The choice depends on slope angle, soil type, tree size, and proximity to environmentally sensitive areas.
The wear and damage cycle
Repeated skidding over the same trails creates rutting, soil compaction, and erosion that can last decades. Logs being dragged uproot vegetation, crush seedlings, and damage the root systems of remaining trees. In wet conditions, a single pass can churn soil into mud that flows downslope. Regulatory agencies now mandate skid trail planning and spacing rules to limit cumulative damage; some operations leave 30 to 40 percent of forest untraversed to allow natural recovery.The term skidding originates from logs being skidded, or slid roughly, across the ground, a practice far older than mechanical equipment. Horse and oxen skidding dominated from the 1800s through the mid-1900s; the shift to mechanized skidders accelerated production dramatically from the 1950s onward but also amplified environmental impact per unit area.
Operator skill and machine condition directly affect both productivity and collateral damage. Careless operator technique, dragging logs at wrong angles, backhaul routes, or rapid pivots, compounds trail degradation. Worn cables or grapple teeth may require multiple passes to move a single log. The economics of skidding drive crew behavior: payment by volume incentivizes speed over trail care, creating pressure that can conflict with long-term forest health commitments.
