A dead stand is a forest area where most or all trees have died while still rooted, leaving standing trunks and branches. Unlike a cleared or harvested forest, the wood remains on the stump, creating a landscape of bleached or darkened vertical timber. Dead stands can span from a few hectares to thousands of hectares, depending on what killed them.

The causes vary by region and climate. Bark beetle infestations, particularly spruce beetles in North America and mountain pine beetles across western forests, kill trees faster than any other agent. Disease such as root rot or canker can kill stands gradually over years. Drought stress weakens trees and makes them vulnerable to insect attack. Wind throw, flooding, or volcanic ash can kill everything in a stand at once. Fires that kill without consuming the timber also create dead stands, distinct from burned-out areas where fuel consumption is complete.

Timber value and salvage

Dead timber loses value rapidly. Heartwood becomes brittle and prone to checking and splitting. Sapwood becomes stained or discolored by fungal growth. Bark loosens and falls, exposing wood to further degradation and insect colonization. A dead stand is usually only economically harvestable in the first few years after death, before the wood loses structural integrity. Salvage operations must move quickly, and logistics can be difficult if the stand is remote or on steep terrain.

Foresters distinguish between recently dead stands, where wood is still merchantable, and old dead stands, where only the lowest-grade material or bioenergy feedstock can be recovered. The rate of decay depends on wood species, climate, and insect activity. Conifers degrade faster than hardwoods in most environments.

Dead stands create complex forest management decisions. They pose increased fire risk because standing dead wood is highly flammable and dry. They reduce habitat for some species but create conditions for others, including woodpeckers and beetles. Leaving dead stands unharvested is often cheaper than salvage, but this choice depends on fire risk, adjacent forest health, and market conditions for low-grade timber.
