A temporary speed restriction where track maintenance or engineering work is being carried out at a particular place.

A slack is a section of railway track where trains must reduce speed because maintenance, repair, or engineering work is underway. The restriction is temporary, typically lasting from hours to weeks depending on the job scope. Speeds through a slack can drop from the line's normal operating speed to 20 mph or lower, with the exact limit posted on portable signs at the approach and removal of the restriction.

Slacks serve multiple purposes in track maintenance. Permanent way gangs working on sleeper replacement, rail welding, or ballast consolidation need reduced train speeds to ensure worker safety and prevent vibration that would compromise precision work. On lines with poor track geometry, civil engineers may impose a slack while measuring and recording defects. Modern track recording vehicles often operate under slack conditions to obtain clean data without dynamic interference from normal traffic.

Signalling and notification

A slack is implemented through the signalling system or by trackside notice, depending on the railway's operational procedures. On controlled lines, the authority responsible for maintenance issues a Possession or Work Order that removes normal line speed authority. Drivers receive notification through speed restriction boards, typically yellow and black chevrons, positioned at the start and end of the affected section. On busy lines, slacks may be announced to drivers via radio dispatch or integrated into the electronic cab display system.

The term originates from the concept of slackening or reducing something, in this case train speed. Unlike a permanent speed restriction, which reflects track geometry or curvature, a slack is explicitly temporary and conditional on active work. Removing the restriction is formal: the maintenance gang must confirm the line is clear and safe, often signing it off with the signaller or track authority before normal speeds resume.

Slacks appear most frequently on lines undergoing major renewal, branch lines with frequent patching, and heritage railways where maintenance windows are limited. On high-speed lines, slacks are avoided where possible through careful scheduling and night working. The cumulative impact of multiple slacks on journey time is significant in freight and passenger planning, so operations departments coordinate slack placement to minimize disruption while allowing essential work to proceed safely.
