A sledge brake is a mechanical track brake that works by pressing a flat metal block or shoe directly against the top of a rail, relying on friction to slow or stop a rail vehicle. The shoe is typically cast iron or steel and mounted on a lever arm or beam; when the brake is applied, the shoe is forced downward onto the rail surface with considerable pressure. This is one of the earliest practical braking systems used on railways and remained in service well into the twentieth century on many lines, particularly on freight and shunting operations where speed demands were lower.

The sledge brake operates through direct mechanical linkage: a hand lever or steam cylinder pulls a rod that forces the brake shoe down against the rail with a mechanical advantage. The friction between shoe and rail surface generates the braking force. Because the shoe slides along the rail under load rather than gripping it dynamically, the system is inherently simple and robust. No rubber, air pressure, or complex linkages are required, making it reliable in dirty, cold, or poorly maintained conditions that would disable more refined brakes.

The central weakness of the sledge brake is accelerated wear. Both the brake shoe and the rail head are abraded by continuous friction; the rail surface becomes scored and roughened, and shoes require frequent replacement. Sledge brakes also generate significant noise and heat, and the braking effort is difficult to modulate smoothly. On steep grades or in emergency stops, the shoe can lock against the rail, creating flat spots on locomotive or wagon wheels. This limitation made sledge brakes unsuitable for fast passenger services where controlled, even deceleration is essential.

The term "sledge" refers to the action of the shoe dragging or sledging across the rail, not to any resemblance to a sledge or sled. By the mid-twentieth century, sledge brakes had been largely superseded on main lines by block brakes (which grip the wheel rim) and vacuum or air brakes (which offer superior modulation and safety). However, they remained in use on sidings, works, and narrow-gauge industrial railways where capital investment in modern brake systems was not justified and low operating speeds were the norm.
