Sleep: uncontrolled rotation around a single axis
A shaft or rotating part is said to be sleeping when it spins rapidly about its own centerline while remaining in a fixed location in space, rather than precessing, wobbling, or executing any other compound motion. The term describes pure rotation without translation or nutation. You observe this most clearly in vertical spindle systems or in bearings where axial and radial constraint are very tight, leaving only rotation about the spindle axis as the available degree of freedom.
Sleep becomes a concern in high-speed applications because a sleeping shaft generates precise, repeatable vibration signatures that depend only on imbalance and bearing condition at that single rotational speed. Unlike a precessing or wandering shaft, which may self-correct through complex motion, a sleeping shaft locks into its plane of rotation. This makes balancing critical: even modest imbalance at high rpm creates significant forces because the imbalance vector rotates at full speed in a fixed plane rather than being distributed through space.
Recognition and consequences
Sleep is easiest to identify in spindle-driven systems using proximity probes or accelerometers mounted radially. You will see a pure rotational component at the spindle frequency with minimal low-frequency precession content. In contrast, a shaft that is not sleeping will show energy spread across multiple frequencies and directions as the centerline traces a path through the bearing clearance space. Severe sleeping can lead to rapid bearing wear because the load zone remains fixed and does not rotate around the raceway, concentrating stress.The condition appears most often in precision grinding spindles, dental handpieces, and machine tool spindle systems where bearing preload is high and clearances are minimal. Bearing design directly influences whether sleep occurs: preloaded angular-contact pairs or hydrostatic bearings encourage sleeping, while loosely fitted rolling-element bearings in pillow blocks may permit wobble or precession instead.
