A sleeping table is a flat or slightly inclined platform, typically 2 to 4 metres long and 1 to 2 metres wide, used in ore processing to separate valuable mineral particles from waste by washing. Crushed ore (often finer than 2 mm) is fed onto the table with a controlled flow of water. The combination of gravity, gentle water flow, and the table's slight angle causes heavier mineral particles to settle and migrate downslope while lighter gangue (waste rock) washes away or remains suspended.

The table surface is usually wooden slats, rubber matting, or corrugated metal, which helps trap and hold finer particles of value while allowing water to drain through. The angle of inclination is shallow, typically 5 to 15 degrees, which is why the term sleeping is used: the table is not steep enough to produce rapid gravitational separation like a chute or sluice. This gentler motion is actually an advantage when processing fine material, as it reduces particle breakage and allows more careful sorting.

Sleeping tables are common in alluvial gold and tin operations, where they handle material already coarsely concentrated by earlier gravity devices such as sluices or spiral concentrators. Some designs use a rocking or oscillating motion to enhance separation, though these are technically shaking rather than sleeping tables. The rate of water supply and the feed rate of ore must be carefully balanced: too much water causes valuable material to wash away; too little causes blockage and poor stratification.

The main wear point is the table surface itself, which becomes grooved and develops low spots where particles preferentially accumulate and block flow. Regular raking and occasional resurfacing are necessary maintenance. In tropical or high-rainfall regions, operators must also manage water runoff to prevent environmental discharge of fine tailings, which is why sleeping tables are increasingly being replaced by trommel screens or hydrocyclones that generate less washwater.

The sleeping table's role in the mill hierarchy is modest but functional: it sits downstream of coarse concentration and upstream of final recovery, handling the intermediate size fraction (typically 0.5 to 5 mm) that other devices handle poorly. Its simplicity, low capital cost, and reliability in skilled hands have kept it in use for over a century, though its inefficiency and labour intensity mean it is now primarily found in small artisanal and small-scale mining operations rather than modern industrial plants.
