Holing is the process of cutting away coal from the bottom of a seam, creating an undercut that destabilizes the overlying mass and causes it to collapse under its own weight. In underground coal mining, this technique has been fundamental to face extraction for over a century, allowing workers to break and load coal without having to blast through the entire thickness of the seam from top to bottom.

The method works because coal at depth is under considerable vertical stress. By removing support from below, the miner exploits the weight of the seam itself. A holer works horizontally into the coal face, typically creating a cavity 1.5 to 2 metres wide and 0.6 to 1.2 metres high, advancing 2 to 3 metres along the face. Once the undercut reaches sufficient depth, the upper coal breaks away in large blocks that can then be picked and shoveled, rather than requiring multiple hammer blows or explosives through a solid seam.

Holing was traditionally done by hand with a coal pick, an exhausting job carried out in cramped, hot conditions with coal dust and poor ventilation. Modern mines use powered holing tools: percussion picks mounted on mobile supports, or in some cases cutting machines that gouge the undercut mechanically. The depth and angle of the hole, and the strength and thickness of the coal being worked, all determine how reliably the overhang will fall and how much additional work is needed to bring down stubborn sections.

The technique is not without hazard. If the holer misjudges the stress or the coal structure, the upper mass can collapse suddenly onto workers in the undercut. Conversely, if the hole is too shallow, the coal refuses to break and the miner must resort to expensive and disruptive blasting. Damp coal is harder to hole cleanly than dry coal, and geological faults or intrusions can create unpredictable behavior. For these reasons, the depth and positioning of the hole require judgment and experience.

Holing has become less common in mechanized longwall operations, where shearer drums cut the entire seam thickness in a single pass. However, in room-and-pillar mines and in less developed mining regions, selective seam working still relies on hand or power holing. The term is also used more broadly in stone quarrying and slate working to describe undercutting operations that prepare stone for splitting or removal.
