A slingload is cargo suspended beneath an aircraft, typically a helicopter, by rigging cables or straps rather than carried internally. The load hangs free below the aircraft during transport, allowing pilots to deliver equipment, materials, or personnel to locations where landing is impossible, dangerous, or impractical. Slingloading is routine in construction, forestry, utility work, and emergency response.

The rigging itself consists of a bridle: four or more cables attached to the load at balanced points, converging at a master link or hook ring that connects to the aircraft's cargo hook. Weight distribution matters critically. An unbalanced load can spin, swing unpredictably, or shift during flight, creating hazards for ground personnel and aircraft stability. Professional riggers spend years learning to calculate center of gravity, determine safe weight capacity based on aircraft type and weather conditions, and inspect rigging hardware for cracks or corrosion before every lift.

Common hazards and limits

A slingload swings like a pendulum, especially during acceleration, deceleration, or turns. Loads in gusty wind can become unstable. Pilots lose direct visual contact with cargo hanging below the fuselage, so ground spotters communicate via radio. Load limits vary by aircraft: a Bell UH-60 Black Hawk typically lifts 2,000 to 4,500 pounds externally depending on fuel, altitude, and temperature. Larger helicopters like a CH-47 Chinook handle 26,000 pounds or more. Exceeding these limits risks tail boom failure or rotor-disc strikes.

Slingloads appear most often in mountainous terrain, disaster recovery, and industrial construction. Utility crews use them to position transformers and cross-arms on transmission towers. Forestry operations sling cut logs from steep slopes. Military and civil aviation both employ this method regularly. The technique requires coordination between pilot, ground crew, riggers, and sometimes a crew member acting as safety observer on the aircraft itself.

The term sling derives from the rigging configuration, resembling a sling that craddles the load. It distinguishes external cargo work from internal carriage and emphasizes the suspended, swinging nature of the delivery. Safety standards and training programs, such as those published by helicopter operators associations and military branches, treat slingload operations as a specialized discipline requiring certification, recurrent practice, and rigid adherence to weight and weather limits.
