To bunker out is to don protective firefighting ensemble, specifically the heavy turnout gear and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) required before entry into a hazardous atmosphere or active fire. The term originates from the bunk room or bunker, the station area where firefighters keep their gear on ready-racks, fully assembled and arranged for rapid deployment.
The gear itself comprises a multi-layer outer shell of aramid or flame-resistant cotton blend (typically meeting NFPA 1971 standards), with inner moisture barriers and insulation. A turnout coat and pants weigh 7 to 10 pounds combined and must be donned over a inner thermal protective layer. Bunker out also means securing the helmet with face shield, gloves rated to withstand contact with 500-degree surfaces, and boots with slip-resistant soles rated for thermal and chemical protection.
The SCBA is the final and most critical component. Modern apparatus like Dräger or MSA units carry 30 to 45 minutes of breathing air at rest, less during exertion, and must be checked for pressure before entry. The face piece is sealed and pressure-tested to ensure no contamination reaches the respiratory tract. Bunker out is incomplete without verification that all straps are secure and communication equipment, if present, is functional.
Speed matters operationally, but shortcuts in bunker out create real consequences. Missing a glove strap or failing to fully seal the face piece can result in burn injury or inhalation of toxic gases including carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. Training drills emphasize muscle memory and team accountability: crews call out each member as fully bunker out before movement to the apparatus or entry point.
Bunker out is not unique to structural firefighting. Hazmat teams, industrial rescue crews, and factory emergency responders use the term similarly, though their outer layers and SCBA configurations may differ based on the specific atmospheric hazard: heat, chemical vapors, particulate matter, or asphyxiant gases. The underlying principle is identical: complete protective coverage before exposure.
