smut: coal waste you can't avoid at fault zones
Smut is degraded coal of poor quality found in seams adjacent to geological faults. It differs from normal coal seam material by being softer, more friable, and heavily contaminated with dirt, clay, and other non-combustible matter. Where a fault has displaced or fractured the coal seam, the mechanical stress and groundwater movement break down the coal structure and mix it with surrounding rock and soil, creating this unusable material.
The naming comes from the smudgy, dusty character of the material. Unlike clean coal that fractures into useful lumps, smut crumbles into powder and fine particles that stain hands and equipment. It produces excessive ash when burned and contains too little fixed carbon to justify extraction and transport costs. Miners encounter smut as a band or zone of degradation running through otherwise workable coal, typically extending from a few inches to several feet into the seam on either side of the fault line.
Dealing with smut in extraction
Collieries handle smut by either leaving it in place or diluting it in the coal stream if extraction is unavoidable. Deep seams where faults are numerous and extensive may become uneconomical to work if smut bands are thick or frequent. Surface mining operations can waste considerable time and cost removing smut overburden to reach better coal below. The material must be disposed of as mine waste rather than sold as coal product.
Smut also appears in crushed coal and slack handling, where it refers to the finest dust and dirt component separated from lump coal during screening. In this context it is a processing byproduct rather than geological material, but the term reflects the same poor quality and low calorific value. Some operations burn slack and smut in mine power plants if disposal costs exceed fuel value, but most modern operations reject it entirely.
