A snail is a locomotive frame equipped with a diesel engine or other prime mover but fitted with no traction motors of its own. Instead, it generates electrical power through an on-board generator, feeding that current into the catenary or supply lines to support the traction motors of coupled working locomotives. The snail itself moves only by being pushed or pulled by the locomotives it powers, contributing force through the coupling but not through its own driven wheels.

Snails appear most often in mining and industrial railways where heavy loads must move through tunnels or over grades that exceed the power output of standard mine locomotives. By adding a dedicated power unit without the weight and complexity of a full second locomotive, operators gain extra kilowattage where it matters most. The snail can be positioned at the front or rear of a train, or sometimes sandwiched between loaded cars, depending on the haulage geometry and electrical architecture of the network.

The term reflects the snail's slow, almost parasitic relationship to real locomotives: it clings to the train, contributes power, but moves only as fast as something else drags it along. The metaphor has endured in underground mining operations, particularly in British and European collieries, where such supplementary power units have been standard practice for over a century.

Modern snails are rare in rail operations outside mining and legacy industrial systems. Modern freight and passenger lines use regenerative braking, higher-capacity main locomotives, and distributed power locomotives (equipped with remote-controlled traction motors) instead. However, snails remain in service in a handful of heritage railways and underground operations where original electrical infrastructure limits traction motor installation on standard frames.
