A snow guard is a mechanical device bolted or welded to a roof surface to prevent accumulated snow and ice from sliding off in large, dangerous sheets. Roofs with smooth finishes, low pitches, or metal cladding shed snow suddenly when warming or wind stress breaks the bond between ice and surface. Snow guards interrupt this motion by creating friction and mechanical resistance, keeping the snow in place until it can melt gradually or be cleared safely.
The most common type is the tubular snow guard, consisting of round or oval metal bars mounted perpendicular to the roof slope on brackets spaced 3 to 4 feet apart. Painted steel and aluminum versions are standard; stainless steel is used in corrosive environments. A single row of guards typically holds 12 to 18 inches of settled snow depending on roof angle and guard height. Steeper roofs and heavier snow loads require multiple parallel rows. Some jurisdictions mandate guards on roofs above pedestrian walkways, exits, or parked cars.
Installation and placement
Guards must be installed with fasteners that penetrate the roof deck and reach structural members, or be welded directly to steel roof panels. Poor fastening causes guards to tear loose under snow load and can damage the roof membrane. Placement matters: guards positioned too close to the eave allow snow to back up and create ice dams; placed too far down the roof, they become ineffective. Building codes specify minimum setback distances and maximum spacing.
Paddle-type guards, which are smaller and less visually obtrusive, work for light snow climates but cannot handle sustained heavy loads. Cable systems and snow fences offer alternatives but require more maintenance. All guards require regular inspection: fastener corrosion, bent brackets, and accumulated ice around the guard base can render them useless or cause structural failure of the roof system beneath.
The term reflects the device's purpose plainly: it guards against snow movement. In cold regions with steep roofs and predictable heavy snow, snow guards are standard practice and often required by code. In mild climates, they are used only where consequences of uncontrolled snow discharge are severe.
