Sheet rock is a sandwich of gypsum plaster between two layers of kraft paper, formed into rigid panels typically 4 feet wide by 8, 10, 12, or 16 feet long. The gypsum core is chemically set during manufacturing, not kiln-fired, which makes the panels lightweight enough to handle by hand yet rigid enough to span wall studs without sagging. A standard half-inch panel weighs around 50 pounds; five-eighths-inch panels run closer to 65 pounds and are favored where fire rating or sound deadening matters.
The name "sheet rock" is a genericized trademark; Sheetrock was the original brand introduced by U.S. Gypsum in 1916. The term has stuck across the trade even as many manufacturers now produce equivalent panels. Workers call the material drywall, wallboard, plasterboard, or gypsum board depending on region and habit, but sheet rock remains the most common casual name on job sites.
Installation begins with fastening panels to wall studs or ceiling joists using either nails or screws, typically spaced 16 inches on center. The seams between adjacent panels are then "finished" by taping them with joint compound: a thin coat of "mud" goes down first, then mesh tape is embedded, followed by multiple coats of compound that are sanded smooth between applications. On walls meant to receive paint, three to four finish coats are standard. Texture finishes and spray-applied compounds speed the process but are less common in higher-end work.
Variants and Fire Ratings
Type X sheet rock contains glass fibers throughout the gypsum core and is required by code in fire-rated assemblies, stairwells, and attached garages; it is heavier than standard panels and costs more. Moisture-resistant board, identifiable by its green facing paper, is rated for bathrooms and kitchens, though it must still be paired with proper vapor barriers and ventilation to prevent mold growth. Lightweight panels designed for ceiling installation contain less water and weigh 10 to 15 percent less than standard stock, making them easier to install overhead.
The material fails when the gypsum core becomes saturated, loses its structural integrity, or is subjected to impact that breaks the bond between plaster and paper facing. Moisture damage spreads quickly and allows mold colonization. Oversanding joint compound creates a weak paper substrate prone to telegraphing, a defect where slightly raised compound lines show through paint once it dries. Improper spacing of fasteners or use of the wrong fastener type leads to nail pops and screw heads that eventually break through the finish.
Sheet rock occupies the middle ground between lath-and-plaster (slower, thicker, more durable) and alternatives like plaster veneer systems or foam-backed wallboard. Its speed of installation and cost efficiency made it the standard for commercial and residential construction by the mid-20th century, and it remains so across North America. Recycled gypsum is now recovered from demolition and reused in agriculture and wallboard manufacture, though contamination from paint and fasteners complicates the process.
