Softwood comes from coniferous trees, principally species of pine, fir, spruce, larch, and cedar. Despite the name, softwood is not soft in the everyday sense; the classification refers to the botanical structure of the tree, not the hardness of the finished timber. Pine heartwood can be harder than some species classified as hardwood. What distinguishes softwood anatomically is the absence of vessels, or pores, in the wood grain.
Softwoods account for roughly 80 percent of global timber production and dominate construction framing, plywood manufacture, and pulp production. A typical softwood like Douglas fir or spruce grows faster than hardwood species, reaches harvestable size in 40 to 60 years, and offers predictable grading and machining properties. The wood machines cleanly, accepts fasteners reliably, and dries relatively quickly when properly stacked. These practical advantages have made softwood the default structural timber in North America, Scandinavia, and much of Europe.
Softwood timber is graded by size, moisture content, and defect tolerance. Visual grades like No. 2 or Select Structural are common in North America, while European systems use strength classes tied to modulus of elasticity. Kiln-dried softwood typically reaches 12 to 15 percent moisture content for construction use. The wood shrinks more across the grain than along it, and this directional movement is a chronic concern in large solid members and assembled structures.
Durability and treatment
Untreated softwood has poor resistance to decay and insect attack outdoors. Sapwood, the outer growth rings, is particularly vulnerable. Pressure treatment with preservatives like copper-based compounds extends service life where the wood contacts soil or remains damp. Heartwood of some species, notably western red cedar and larch, contains natural extractives that provide moderate durability without treatment. Southern pine heartwood similarly resists rot better than its sapwood.
The softwood-versus-hardwood distinction obscures the real drivers of performance: density, grain structure, moisture stability, and chemical composition. A specifier choosing between species must weigh growth rate and cost against strength requirements, dimensional stability, durability expectations, and finishing characteristics. Softwood remains dominant in commodity applications not because the wood is soft, but because the trees grow fast and the economics work.
