falseheart: decay that masquerades as sound timber
A falseheart is a zone of decay or discoloration within a tree trunk that visually resembles the heartwood but lacks its structural integrity. It typically appears as a darker region in the cross-section, fooling sawyers and graders into treating it as usable solid timber when it is actually compromised by fungal rot, chemical alteration, or bacterial staining. The defect becomes apparent only during milling, when the material crumbles, checks excessively, or fails mechanical tests.
Falseheart forms through several mechanisms. Fungal decay organisms, particularly those that cause brown rot or soft rot, can penetrate the sapwood and create a darkened zone that mimics heartwood coloration without producing the chemical extractives that make true heartwood durable. In some species, internal staining from Ceratocystis fungi or bacterial action creates deep discoloration without proportional loss of density, making visual inspection from the bark nearly useless. Water stress, frost crack healing, or insect galleries that become colonized by fungi can also initiate these false dark zones.
Recognition and sorting
Falseheart is primarily a sorting problem at the mill. Graders must distinguish it from legitimate heartwood using tools beyond visual assessment: pilodyn penetration testing, moisture measurement, and acoustic velocity testing can reveal brittleness or cellular collapse. Some falsehearts ring hollow under percussion or show abnormal checking patterns during kiln drying. Species like beech, maple, and birch are particularly prone to falseheart development, especially in standing timber that has experienced stress or has been attacked by wood-staining fungi before felling.The economic impact is direct and painful. A log that grades as premium heartwood-bearing timber may yield unusable lumber after processing, creating yield loss and downstream manufacturing defects. Falseheart cannot be reliably detected from the bark exterior, so it often reaches the sawmill. Some mills use X-ray or acoustic scanning on high-value logs to identify suspect zones before primary breakdown, but this adds cost and is not universal practice.
The term persists because the defect is fundamentally deceptive: it presents as heartwood to the eye but behaves as something else entirely in service. Prevention rests primarily on prompt felling and processing of trees showing stress symptoms, and on understanding species and site conditions that favor staining fungi. Logs with visible external staining, branch die-back, or frost cracks warrant extra scrutiny.
