solenoid: electromagnetic coil that moves things

A solenoid is a coil of wire wound tightly around a cylindrical form, usually with a movable iron or steel core (called a plunger or armature) inside or near it. When current flows through the coil, the resulting magnetic field pulls or pushes that core, converting electrical energy into mechanical motion. This simple conversion makes solenoids one of the most common actuators in industrial equipment, doing everything from locking doors to engaging clutches to opening valve ports.

The solenoid works because a current-carrying coil generates a magnetic field proportional to the current and the number of wire turns. The plunger, made of ferromagnetic material, is attracted toward regions of stronger field. By controlling when current flows, you control when the plunger moves. Most industrial solenoids are designed for on-off duty: the plunger snaps fully in when energized and springs back out when de-energized. Response times are typically 10 to 100 milliseconds depending on coil resistance, applied voltage, and spring strength.

Solenoids come in two main configurations: push-type, where the plunger extends outward as it's pulled into the coil; and pull-type (also called attracting type), where the plunger is drawn inward. A third variant, the solenoid valve, integrates the coil with valve spools or poppets to control fluid or gas flow. Industrial solenoid coils are rated for specific voltages (typically 12 VDC, 24 VDC, 110 VAC, or 240 VAC) and duty cycles. Intermittent duty allows higher currents; continuous duty requires lower power to avoid overheating the coil.

Failure modes and selection

Solenoids fail most often from burnt coils caused by voltage spikes, sustained overcurrent, or inadequate cooling. The plunger can stick if dirt or rust prevents free motion, or if the return spring weakens. When specifying a solenoid, you must match the stroke distance (usually 10 to 50 mm), the force required at full extension, the voltage available, and the response speed needed. Larger forces require more turns, more current, or a stronger spring, all of which increase size and heat generation.

The term 'solenoid' comes from the Greek 'solenoides', meaning tube-shaped. In industrial practice, solenoids are found in motor starters (where they control contactors), pneumatic systems (solenoid pilot valves), hydraulic circuits, and countless automated machinery functions. A solenoid switch or solenoid relay uses the plunger movement to open or close electrical contacts, allowing a low-power control signal to switch a high-power load.
